Dervis was also used as a nickname by the real Cypriots, ie the Greek Cypriots.

If your relative was of Turkish Cypriot extraction he probably came to the UK for economic reasons or after the brutal, criminal genocide by Turkey in 1974 when Turkish Cypriots found themselves subjugated as well.

It may be possible that if he is of Greek extraction he fled to the UK due to turkish racism barbarity and atrocities which were predominant for the past 50 years.
