John Root (1789-1859) Dansville, Steuben Co., NY

Looking for any information on the early life of John Root, perhaps born in 1789 in Pennsylvania, and later of Dansville, Steuben County, New York. Most likely the son of Jared Root.

John Root married Polly Bridge, b. Sept. 11, 1793, d. Oct. 27, 1867. Marriage date and location are unknown me. Bridge (1924, page 392) says: " Probably there are descendants in the neighborhood of Dansville." I have identified more than a hundred and fifty of their descendents

The parents of Polly Bridge were Jesse Bridge and Keziah Cutting.

Jesse was a Revolutionary War veteran from Massachusetts who then settled in Vermont and raised a large family of 15 children. All the children were born (1790 - 1814)in Orwell, Addison Co., VT. "He was a farmer. He removed to New York from Vermont about 1817, and bought, or took up, a large tract of land." Bridge (1924, page 392).

So if John Root FIRST meet Polly Bridge in New York, this statement provide one limit on their marriage date.

There is a John Root listed in the 1820 US Census (Aug. 7) Dansville, Steuben Co., NY
Male under 10 = 1; male age 16-25 = 1; male age 26-44 =1
Female under 10 = 1; female age 26-44 = 1; total 5 people
(this agrees fairly well)
If this is the same family, and the two young children are theirs, this would suggest a marriage date of 1817 or 1818. Polly would have been about 24 years old. This date is in general agreement with the Bridge family move to NY. However the names and fate of these two young children are unknown.

John is reported to have been born in Pennsylvania (1850 census and 1860 Mortality Schedule)

There are four know children of John and Polly Root all born in New York (info from 1850 census): Nelson Bridge Root (b. abt. 1825), David Root (b. abt. 1826), James P. Root, (b. abt. May 1827), and Ester Root, (b. abt. 1832).

I have the name of the wives and children for the three sons; but nothing on Ester after the 1850 census.

Some people have suggested that John Root was born in or from " Orwell, Addison Co., VT", but that would be contrary to his census records.

Thank you David Bridge
