Susan,

I took a look at Ellen Decker's book about John, the bear hunter, and his family. Unfortunately, I didn't find a reference to a Ruth Cutright or her marriage to James Engle. Unless Ruth was a middle name. John died in 1830, John Jr, the dear hunter did not have a daughter named Ruth per Decker. I did find a reference to Andrew Cutright (John's son) and Phoebe Engle. I also looked at John, the indian scout, but did not find a Ruth, or any indication that that John's children ever lived in Ross Co.

Decker's book is pretty thorough but lacks an index that can be used for lookups. I believe the Engle family came from PA, the Cutright's of course from VA.

Wish I could be of more help. You may want to contact Ross Co Gen Soc and see if they can do a look up for you in marriage records and see if you can confirm a Ruth and James Engle. Or someone else on this site may have an answer.
