William E. Cutler, dinosaur collector Canada + Africa
Hello,
I am writing a biography on William Edmund {Edmond} Cutler who collected dinosaurs in Canada, England, and Africa. He was born in London, England on July 23, 1878. He lived at/near Holland Park Lane and Notting?? Hill Gate. At about age 16 he went to Brislau, Silesia (now Wroclaw, Poland). He came to Canada, evidently alone in 1898. He set up a farm and ranch near Carbon, Alberta, Canada with Frederick S. Presant. Around 1912 Cutler became interested in paleontology and began collecting fossils (dinosaurs mostly)for the American Museum of Natural History, British Museum (Natural History) and a small museum in Calgary, Alberta. He collected dinosaurs in Tedaguru in today's Tanzania, and died there of malaria August 30, 1925. He is buried in Lindi, Tanzania. In Africa, he taught future paleoanthropology great Louis Leakey, then on his first dig.
Cutler was predeceased by his parents. In 1916 he had a cousin Fred R. (K.) Freir of Bylock Hall Pondessand (?), England who was involved in the publishing business. In a WWI military document Cutler gave his next of kin as Clarance (Clarence?) Henry Cutler of Brighton, England. Upon his death, Cutler had 2 aunts in London, a Heliose Watson and Ellen I. Watson. Cutler never married, but may have been engaged (c. 1924) to a girl with the surname of Lingard who resided in the hamlet of Wingello, Saskatchewan, Canada.
Cutler was a fascinating character in the annals of vertebrate paleontology. If any of this information sounds familiar to you, please contact me.
