LUZERNE CUSTER

Thought I'd pass this along... the Montgomery County Ohio Historical society has an exhibit coinciding the the INVENTING FLIGHT celebration that's being held here in Dayton, Ohio to celebrate the Wright Brothers and the invention of powered flight.

Part of the exhibit includes two photo's of Luzerne Custer (one seated under a balloon) and one of him actually in flight in what appears to be the same balloon). They also have a large wooden ring with ropes attached that was part of one of his balloon's. For those of you who don't know Luzerne, he was a member of the Early Birds aviation group, and a pioneer in ballooning. He held several balloon related patents, and received an distance award for solo flight. He's probably more famous for inventing the electric and gas-operated wheelchair and also the "Custer Car" amusement ride.

I'm unable to get photographs of the exhibit... but if anyone is planning to visit here during the celebration they might want to check it out.

It's a shame that the Wright Brothers eclipse our other aviation pioneers here in Dayton. There's a large article in the paper that has a timeline for the history of ballooning and it doesn't even mention Luzerne.
