William H. Cushman -- Whiteside Co, IL
Posted by: Richard Garrett (ID *****5794) Date: January 19, 2008 at 10:00:48
  of 1053

William H. Cushman was born about 1791 in Vermont. (This is the location reported by his son Crocket in the US Census of 1920 of Portland, OR. The location is confirmed by reports of his sister’s birthplace; see below.)

William was a corporal in the war of 1812. He served in the New York Militia, in the ninth regiment of infantry, from Essex County, commanded by Martin Joiner (perhaps in the Siege of Plattsburgh in 1814?).

William was in Ft. Wayne, IN, by 1828. In that year he signed a petition complaining about the conduct of General John Tipton. The petition was also signed by Dr. Benjamin Cushman, a cousin of William H. Cushman. Benjamin was descended from William Cushman and Sarah Holloway through their son William; and he became a prominent citizen in early Ft. Wayne.

William H. Cushman married Betsy Barnett about 1829, perhaps in Ft. Wayne, IN. Betsy was born in PA. She may have been related to James Barnett, a prominent citizen of Ft. Wayne, IN, at the time.

William’s middle name was Holloway.

From about 1830 to about 1835 William and Betsy lived in Ft. Wayne, IN. Their two oldest children (named Holloway and John) were born in IN about 1830 and 1833. About 1835 the family relocated to Portland Township, Whiteside County, IL; their next child Madore was born in IL about 1836.

William H. Cushman had a sister named Narcissa Cushman. She was born in Vermont in 1797 (numerous census reports state this). She married Allen Baker in 1818 in Essex County, NY. The Bakers are found in Essex County through the 1840 US Census. In the 1850 census they are found in Whiteside County, IL, next door to the home of William Cushman.

William’s parents were Daniel Cushman and Molly Bowman. Daniel and Molly married in Brooklyn, Windham County, CT, in 1777. By 1804 there were in Essex County, NY, where Daniel participated in the creation of the town of Schroon Lake. In the 1840 census Daniel is a resident of Schroon Lake, living in the home of Allen and Narcissa Baker; his age is given as 85. By 1850 the Bakers had relocated to Whiteside County, IL.

Daniel was born on June 28, 1755. His parents were William Cushman and Sarah Holloway. Daniel served in the Revolutionary War; and he was a pensioner from that war. He married Molly Bowman on December 21, 1777, in Brooklyn, Windham County, CT. Daniel died on April 12, 1845 (according to his pensioner’s record), perhaps in Franklin County, NY.

Thus William H. Cushman was a grandson of William Cushman and Sarah Holloway.
