B.D. et al. Here are some notes on this subject. As you can see, there is more to sort out but I hope some of this will be of help. Robert Cushman Cushmandna@aol.com (4) 1.3a.5.4 Jackson Cushman86 -------------------------------------------------- Birth: 1843, Barnwell Co.,SC86 Residence: Barnwell Co.,SC86 Flags: Gen #9 (Merriman, John, Simeon, Nathaniel, Isaac, Isaac, Thomas, Robert.) Son of Merriman Cushman and Linsy (Unknown) Cushman. All children of this couple assumed from 1850 census record, which places them in the household. We assume they are children of the couple but this needs proof. Research: My 27 Jul 2008 post to Drew, and response to “oldnail” who sent me a separate e-mail. Thank you Drew. Your post and an e-mail from "oldnail" (great handle!) make great sense to me. Because this info may be of current or future interest to listers, I have summarized the "theory" below, followed by detail. This is still based on a few assumptions...so caveat emptor! I think the father of the "A. J. Cushman, from the 1880 census was also called "Jack" Cushman. He was probably "Jackson" Cushman, a son of Merriman Cushman, b. 1815, Barnwell District. I have his lineage way back, so this (may) fit our "A. J. " or "Jack" or "Jackson" into the family tree. That's progress! It is also probable that Jack Cushman's wife was Victoria and their child "A. Cushman" was named Alice. I still have not identified "J. M. Cushman, b. 1879 or "C.J. Cushman, b. 1872, though we do know they were sons. And, that also means I have not linked these two to any descendants. The 1900 census shows a Jack Cushman married about 1898 to a Larson (Unknown) Cushman b. March 1840 Millbrook Township, Aiken, SC. Parents of both this husband and wife were born SC. This recent marriage could mean Victoria has passed away by 1898 and Jack has remarried. All this still a theory....here's more detailed basis for this thinking: 1850 census for Barnwell County, SC has Jackson Cushman, estimated birth year of 1843, b. SC, in Dwelling # 1495, household ID 1495, and..., Merriman Cushman, estimated birth year 1815, SC dwelling # 1495. The 1850 census does not specify sons and daughters, however, these two are in the same household, so I am assuming that Merriman is the father of Jackson and that, later in life, Jackson could have been better known by the name "Jack." According to Drew Smith's recent post to the Edgefield list, the 1870 census for Spring Grove Township, Edgefield Co., SC shows 30 year old Jack Cushman; 26 year old Victoria Cushman and 1 year old Alice Cushman. This establishes a relationship between Jack and Victoria and also gives a clue to at least one descendant, Alice, b. 1869. (Same as "A." Cushman" shown as daughter of "A. J. Cushman" in the 1880 census). Correspondent "oldnail" provided this same info and added that in the 1870 census an Ann Cullum, age 47 was living in this same household with a number of other Cullems, presumably her children according to their ages. Her spouse not present. This suggests that Ann Cullum might have been Victoria's mother. 1880 census gives: A.J. Cushman, b. 1840 in South Carolina; male head of household. Farm laborer, White, Mother and father both b. South Carolina. C.V. Cushman, b. 1842 Aiken, Aiken, SC, wife, Both father and mother born South Carolina. Children are: J.M. born 1879 A. born 1869 C.J. born 1872 1900 Federal census for Milbrook Township, Aiken, SC shows Jack Cushman, b. Feb 1840, SC married (estimated date of marriage 1898) to Larson (Unknown) Cushman, b. Mar 1840, Millbrook Township, Aiken, SC. Both parents of this husband and wife were born SC. This recent marriage could mean Victoria has passed away by 1898 and Jack has remarried. The 1880 census for Millbrook, Aiken, SC also shows an M. Cushman, age 24, with wife Victoria, age 18, and mother Jinny Cushman age 65 (M. Cushman's mother) but this Victoria must be from a subsequent generation (This Victoria was b. 1862). I have a Marion Taylor Cushman. b. 1844, son of Carpus Cushman in the data base with no record of wife....I also have a note (from somewhere. I cannot recall the source) of Marion Cushman m. Jesica Redd, had daughter Jane Cushman b Jan 1849, d 16 Mar 1915. Drew. Thanks for your help. And I hope this summary of the possibilities helps some one else.
