MINERVA MONTAGUE, dau. of Rev. Elijah b. March 22, 1797, at North Leverett, Mass.
Married, Dec. 2, 1819, John Gleason CURTISS. He was b. June 11, 1795, in Leverett, Mass., and emigrated, in 1820, on an ox sled, to Busti, New York, from which place he moved to Pomfret, where he resided two years, and from thence to Carroll, N. Y., where he resided several years, and then settled in Frewsburg. He was the first Justice of the Peace in Pomfret, which office he held two years. He was also Deacon of the Baptist church in Frewsburg for many years. He died April 23, 1863, in Frewsburg, aged 69 years. His wife died Dec. 27, 1871, aged 74 years, at Kiautone, N. Y.
Mrs. Minerva Curtiss was respected and beloved by all who knew her. She enconntered severe trials and hardships, was naturally a strongly constituted woman, as shown by her care of her husband during his protracted sickness. She and her husband were both ever ready to administer aid to the sick and consolation to the dying, and at their death were mourned by a large circle of friends. She was always cheerful and affectionate, obliging and patient. She combined all the qualities of a devoted wife and mother. She lived to bury all of her children but two, Flavios J. and John Leland.

son of John G. and Minerva (MONTAGUE) Curtiss, b. June 8, 1820, in Busti, N. Y.
At the age of 21 he left his home in Carroll, Chautauqua County N. Y., and traveled through nearly all the Southern and Western States, and to Cuba. Was in California at the time of the gold fever; became a miner, met with success; went to Texas, served all through the Texas and Mexican war; was one of the noted Texas Rangers. Was in all the battles from Palo Alto to the capture of the city of Mexico; was wounded, taken prisoner, made his escape after great privations, and at the close of the war was granted, by government, a large tract of land in Texas, on which he settled, married, and became a planter. He also practiced medicine while on his farm, and became noted as a physician. He was also ordained as a Baptist preacher.
Soon after the beginning of the late civil war he joined the Confederate army as a surgeon, served nearly three years, became sick, resigned, came home, and died in July, 1864.
He married, (1) Jane Escew. After her death he m. (2) Mary Whitesides.

FLAVIUS JOSEPHUS CURTISS, son of John G. and Minerva Montague Curtiss, b.Feb. 24, 1824, in Busti, N. Y.
Married, Jan. 25, 1849, Lucy BOYD. He has held a number of offices in the gift of the town, being one of the assessors, and is highly esteemed by his fellow townsmen. Occupation, a farmer. Resides in Kiantone, Chautauqua county, N. Y.

EDWARD JONES CURTISS, son of John G. and Minerva Montague Curtiss, b. Feb. 24, 1832.
Married, Oct. 18, 1856, Elizabeth EATON, dau. of Vearon Eaton, who was a lineal descendant, on his mother's side, of the family of the celebrated Indian missionary, George Elliott, and also of the celebrated and eccentric Divine, Lorenzo Dow. She d. Sept. 18, 1862. Mr. Curtiss d. Nov. 18, 1863.

POLLY ANN CURTISS, dau. of John G. and Minerva Montague Curtiss, b. May 1, 1833, at Frewsburg, Chautauqua county, N. Y.; d. Sept. 19, 1870, at Frewsburg.
Married, Sept. 29, 1852, at Frewsburg, Abner HOWARD, who was b. Nov. 4, 1825, at Wardsborough, Vt.

JOHN LELAND CURTISS, son of John G. and Minerva Montague Curtiss, b. Aug. 18, 1841, in Frewsburg, town of Carroll, N. Y. Married, Nov. 22, 1865, Asenath Emma HEMMENGER, dau. of Oramel Hemmenger. Served three and one-half years in the late civil war, participated in eighteen battles, was three times wounded, and taken prisoner for a few hours, and honorably discharged at the close of the war, and now receives a pension. Resides in the town of Frewsburg, but the post-office is Jamestown, Chautauqua county, N. Y. Has held town offices of constable, collector and pathmaster. Occupation, a farmer.
