Goodwin Curtis family of Williamson Co., TN
I have located the marriage bond and license of my great-great-grandparents, Darius Overstreet and Parmelia Curtis, with the kind help of the Williamson County Archives. They were married on Dec. 24, 1854.
The license states plainly that the bride must be a resident of Williamson Co. Armed with that fact, I looked on the Census records for 1850 and 1860. On both I found Goodwin Curtis(s). Goodwin Curtis married Martha Ann Powers in Williamson Co. Aug. 26, 1824. In 1850, Parmelia is living in Nashville with a Samuel and Myrah Powers, who also married in Williamson Co. My assumption is that Samuel Powers and Martha Ann Powers were siblings, but you know what they say about assumptions.
Martha Ann appears to still be alive in 1840. Twins were born in 1843, and I think Martha Ann must have died soon thereafter. Goodwin married Julia White May 22, 1845, and they had more children. IIRC, his only son was born of the second marriage, James Curtis.
I do not find Goodwin or Julia on the 1870 census either in Williamson Co. or elsewhere in TN(so far). With several daughters and only one son, it's easy to imagine the surname having died out locally, but the blood line likely has not. Hopefully, at least one of the daughters married someone who was local and stayed local.
If there are any descendants of Goodwin Curtis and either of his wives reading this, or anyone who is a descendant of the Powers family, or anyone who knows anything about these family groups, especially where they are buried, please get in touch with me through the contact service.
Thanks.
