Hi Joyce,
I show Elizabeth (d. 1739), whom married in ca. 1713, Robert Dudley (b. 1691), to have been the daughter of JAMES CURTIS (d. 1720) and his wife Elizabeth.James Curtis was the son of Maj. THOMAS CURTIS "of WARENECK" and his wife AVARILLA.Major Thomas came over from England in 1621 on board the ship, the "Flying Harte".If recollection serves me right, he had a brother John Curtis who came about the same time.Thomas had a fairly large family and there a considerable amount of information on him in the "older" genealogical literature. (By"older," I referring to material that was published prior to World War I, and even before the end of the 19th Century.
Robert Dudley, the husband of Elizabeth, was the son of Major ROBERT DUDLEY, Justice and Burgess from Middlesex County, Virginia and his wife, ELIZABETH CURTIS [sic], daughter of a JOHN CURTIS.Robert Dudley was the son of WILLIAM DUDLEY who served as Justice in 1676 from MiddlesexCounty.
Off hand, I'm don't recall which John Curtis was the father of the elder Elizabeth. It has been more than 20 years since I actively researched the Virginia Curtis "clans" and there were a number of early settlers named "John Curtis" and I recall in several instances, I never did feel confident in sorting all of them out.
If you're interested, you should be able to obtain quite ofinformation on Major Thomas and James, if I recall, both men left wills, and both had considerable land holdings, and I am thinking there are even extant church records both.Good luck!
Sincerely, Jay Stein
