Hi,
My name is William C. Brittingham, Jr., ("Bill").I have been corresponding with Betsy G. on Capt. John Alexander Curtis, and his duties in the Confederate Navy. (Also on what I have on other members of the family group.)
My connection to the Curtis family is by marriage of Ann Hopkins, half sister to Margret Va Drummond.Margret Drummond married John Alexander Curtis (JAC). Ann Hopkins married my GGGgrandfather and his first wife's son-William Franklin Brittingham.William Franklin also served in the Confederate Navy. According to all the sources I have researched, Capt. John Alex. Curtis and William Franklin Brittingham were close. In fact, both are buried in Hollywood Cemetery in sites just across from each other.
I am interested in what type of spying did "JAC" do during the Civil War.Betsy has previously provided me a lot of information on JAC and his narrative on the "SQUIB".She just now mentioned about JAC spying near the end of the war.
and indicated that you might have some information.
The basis of this spy business was a question I asked her earlier. My GGGgrandfather, owned about 90 A. less just across Fort Monroe (on Mill Creek). He owned the land from the 1840s to 1887's. The basis of the question was: since William Franklin Brittingham was in the Confederate Navy and his father (William Parker Brittingham) lived right next door to the Union troops (Fort Monroe), William P. Brittingham must have provided some information to his son (William Franklin). Betsy relate an incident about JAC's father-in-law John Hopkins providing information to JAC after each visit to Fort Monroe selling produce.
Do you have any thoughts or documentation on JAC spying activity?
It would be interesting if we exchanged information we have gather. I am willing if you are interested. I have some information on the families with the surname DRUMMOND, HOPKINS, BRITTINGHAM, CURTIS, and other individuals involved in the Civil War (RICHARDSON, FIELDS, RUSSELL, WATSON, and TUNNEL.
I know that this does not relate to your CURTIS in Maryland. But I used this message to write to you. I guess you would say I am lazy.
By the way, I was born and raised in Hampton VA. and am very well informed on St. John's Church, the city courthouse, and the public libraries in the surrounding area.
Hope to hear from you.
Bill Brittingham, Jr.
