My ancestor Joseph W. Curtis was from Mansfield, England, and if it is he buried in Columbiana, AL, he lived from 1794 - 1865.One researcher felt that his father was probably Adm. John Curtis of England. It is also said that either this John Curtis or his father survived the incident known as the "Black Hole of Calcutta" (occurred 1756).This ancestor's name is supposed to have been John, known as "Long John" because he was tall, allowing him to survivethe incident.A lot of work has to be done here and I'm not sure of the connection to your family, but, because of the several coincidences, I have decided to post this message here.Joseph W. was the master of a packet boat based in Montgomery, AL, in the 1830's and his supposed father was an Admiral in the Royal Navy.
Coincidences:
-seafaring
-John
-Joseph
-Calcutta, India
It may only be happenstance, but I felt it was worth trying.Sorry if I bothered you.
