He tied the donkeys tails together

My father in law, Elmer Corneolos Currier, heard the donkey story of an ancestor who stowed away on a ship to come to America because the donkeys pulled their tails off after he tied them together and he was afraid of getting into trouble for it from his parents. He landed near MA we think. Have you heard this story from an ancestor? P.S. That is the correct family spelling of Corneolos but may have come much later in genealogy.
