John Currie was born in Horton, Buckinghamshire, England. His parents were from Lasswade, Midlothian, Scotland. Their names were Thomas Currie (papermaker) and Anne Currie nee Scott. John, in 1861, was a millwright apprentice at a papermill in Kent.
he had four sisters, Ann Ainslie, Adelaide and Allison (twins) and Agnes Mary.
