Alexander B. Currie-
Posted by: Dr. Stephen Berrey (ID *****9534) Date: June 26, 2004 at 09:39:10

I am seeking historical details regarding the "1st Paid Fire Department Chief/Captain" = Alexander B. Currie, for the City of Colorado Springs, El Paso County, Colorado, in 1895. I want to obtain such information to develop a story about this 1st Paid Fire Department and my paternal 1st great-grandfather (Charles Reuben Berrey) who worked for Captain Currie as his 1st Paid Fire Department "fire wagon driver". They were good friends.

On Monday afternoon at 2:00 PM, 2 September 1895, Captain Currie was one of the close friends who attended the private wedding ceremony of Charles Reuben Berrey (groom) and Ms. Mary Helen Scanlon (bride), at St. Mary's Catholic Church, with Reverend Father Bender officiating.

According to the "1894 City Directory of Colorado Springs, Colorado" (original directory maintained at the "Penrose Public Library", 320 East Huerfano Street, Colorado Springs, Colorado), Captain Currie and the 1st Paid Fire Department team had their 1st fire station located within the back section of Colorado Springs' "City Hall". Captain Currie's home address was listed as: 215 East Huerfano Station.

Captain Currie and his wife Nellie had two daughters: Bessie B. (born: about 1883, Colorado) and Estella C. (born: about 1895, Colorado).

Captain Currie was employed at the same time period as J. G. Johnson, his brother Nels Johnson, including E. E. Baty (became the 2nd Paid Fire Dept. chief). They all worked for Captain Currie.

Alexander B. Currie was born in Scotland, about 1863. He died on 24 July 1925, and was laid to rest at the Evergreen Cemetery, Colorado Springs. His wonderful wife- Mrs. Nellie M. Currrie, died about 1955, and was laid to rest adjacent to her beloved husband in Lot # T-078.

Any details about Captain Currie, photographs of the 1st Paid Fire Department team maintained by his relatives, and stories of this team will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!
