The Curlees of Anson Co trace back through Chowan Co, NC (Chowan Precinct of Albemarle Co) to Nansemond Co, VA, probably the Upper Parish. Elionor Early Albemarle County 02 Sep 1732 Grandsons: Thos. Sutton, James Curlee. Granddaughters: Sarah Sutton, Mary Dale (my plantation called by the name of "Blew Water"). Executrix: Mary Dale. Witnesses: Robt. Evans, Nicholas Fairless, Nathaniel Keele. No probate. Elionor Early was the widow of William Early. Her maiden name was Stephens. Their daughter Eleanor Early m James Curlee d 1713-17 Chowan. They were the parents of James Curlee (Jr) and William Curlee and probably others. James Sanders sold 300 acres in Bertie County on Horse Swamp adjoining Jacob Lewis at Howard's Swamp to Robert Warren on 13 Feb 1728. Wit: George Powell, William Curlee. Bertie Co was formed from Chowan Co. James Sanders was the grandson of John Sanders and Phoebe ??? of Nansemond Co. After John Sanders' death, Phoebe m2 William Curle of Nansemond. Isle of Wight DB 2 p. 39, Robert Sanders of Onslow Precinct on the New River in New York (North Carolina), to THOMAS SANDERS of Nansemond County, 300 acres in both Isle of Wight and Nansemond Counties adjoining Kingsale Swamp, adjoining the late ROBERT SANDERS, son of THOMAS SANDERS SR, and the present THOMAS SANDERS (being part of 1600 acres of land of JONATHAN ROBBINSON, RICHARD THOMAS, and JOHN SANDERS patented on 23 Apr 1681. The said SANDERS will 200 acres of the land to his sons WILLIAM AND RICHARD SANDERS and the said WILLIAM granted part of the land to his brother RICHARD SANDERS, who are now party to this deed. At some time, PHOEBE CURLE, wife of WILLIAM CURLE, Gent. late of Nansemond County and formerly the wife of JOHN SANDERS first named, did grant to JOHN SANDERS, son of the aforesaid RICHARD SANDERS and brother of RICHARD SANDERS 100 acres being the other part of the land mentioned in the aforesaid patent) dated 30 Apr 1733, W: LAWRENCE WOLFERSTON, HENRY COPELAND, and DORCAS (X) COPELAND. Robert Sanders had inherited this land from his brother John Sanders d 1733 New River, Onslow Co, NC. John Sanders was the brother of James Sanders whose 1728 Bertie deed was witnessed by William Curlee. William Curlee married Martha Bush, daughter of William Bush and Martha Hill. Mary Bush, daughter of William Bush and Martha Hill, married John Early, Eleanor Early's brother. The Bush and Hill families trace back to Nansemond too. See my posting at Genforum/Bush. I have not yet found the Early family in Nansemond but expect they probably came from Nansemond as well. William Curle was listed on the VA Quit Rent Rolls in Nansemond in 1704. Phoebe was still living in 1706 when she deeded part of the John Sanders patent land to her granddaughter Phoebe Winborne (wife of John Winborne of Nansemond). James Curlee who m Eleanor Early was almost certainly a son of William Curle of Nansemond by a previous marriage. John Sanders was still living in 1681 when he patented land, and it appears that James Curlee was born before that. In 1699, a Nicholas Tiner sold land to James Curlee on the southwest side of the Chowan River. James Sanders and William Curlee of the 1728 record would have been "stepcousins" if their fathers were stepbrothers. James Curlee was granted 516 acres on 1 Jul 1713 on ye West side of Chowan River, joining Edward Taylor, a run from the head to the mouth, and the sd. River. /s/ Tho. Pollock, Tho. Boyd, N. Chevin, Wm. Reed, C. Gale, T. Knight. James Corlee of ye Prect. of Chowan sold on 22 Jul 1713 to John Early of ye Prect. aforesd. for 40 pounds current money, 516 acres more or less, joining Edward Taylor, ye head of a Run that Issues out of Chowan river and the river. Wit: William Crawford, Ffrancis Macklenddon. Reg. (not given). Edward Taylor of Chowan Prect. sold on 20 Jan 1717 to John Bryan of the Prect. afrsd. for 25 pounds sterling Money of England, 160 acres more or less, joining Lawrence Mague’s Land which formerly belonged to old James Curlee, the mouth of a small branch and the River and is the land whereon the sd. Edward Taylor now lives. Wit: Edward Howard, John Manear. Reg. 17 Apr 1718. I have not been able to trace William Curle of Nansemond further. I have wondered if he might have descended from the Curle for whom "Curles" was named.
