Hi Deborah,
You never stated how you are related, but I am assuming that we are cousins. I am the daughter of Lewis Marion Cummins of Pickaway County, Ashville, Ohio.
Francis Marion Cummins Sr. born July 20, 1834 was my Great granduncle. I have his obiturary and it reads: Francis Marion Cummins was born JUly 20, 1834 near Ashville, Ohio of pioneer parents from Virginia. He died January 5, 1932 aged 97 years, 5 months and 16 days. He was the seventh in a family of eight children to live to a good old age. In his youth, he attended school in a log house, taught by the husband of his only sister. Later he attended Otterbein College at Westerville, Ohio, and lived with Benjamin Hanby, one of the professors, and author of the famous song, "Nellie Gray." His father dying, he was complelled to leave school to help on the farm. When the Civil Ware broke out he early volunteered and spent three years in the service. He traveled and sold campaign supplies in the famous contest between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen A. Douglas. He was a member of the military escort that attended the body of President Lincoln when brought to Columbus. He stood guard at the bier of the martyred president in the rotunda of the capitol. He was a teacher of penmanship both before and after the war. Returning from the war he married Harriet Coil, a teacher and settled on a farm near Columbus, Ohio. To this union nine children were born, five of who survive, namely, Joseph and Ernest of Cedar Rapids; Arthur of Glencoe, Okla; Carrie and Mrs. Frank Beers of Leon. His wife died in Decatur thirty-six years ago. In March, 1887, he brought his family to Iowa and settled on 400 tur.(This part I don't understand, but I am typing what was wrote) He improved and made farms acres of wild land north of Decat of this tract and wilderness. He later moved to a farm just west of Leon and has resided in and near Leon ever since. Beside his children, he is survived by his youngest brother Edward, of Columbus, Ohio, now in his 95th year, and by thirteen grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was reared in the United Brethren Church, but after coming to Leon, he united with the Methodist Church of Decatur, where his membership remained until his death.

There is a little bit more stating arrangements & such. I will send you a copy later. I guess right now I just am so happy that I have finally found someone who is working on connecting with we Ohio's. I have been working on this family tree for about the last four years. I am 64 years old and live in Columbus, Ohio now. However most of my life I lived in Pickaway County, 2 miles southeast of Ashville, Ohioand about 4 miles from where Francis Marion's father, William Cummins Sr., my Great great grandfather lived and died. The home place burned down a few yrs back, but I do have some not so good pictures of it.

I sure hope that we can exchange family information and get to know each other. I have connected approx. 450 relatives to William. I have recently been working on finding out where William really originated from. His death record states that he was born in Fairfax County, Virginia, but there are no records of such. I feel pretty sure that he was born in Scotland and was a immigrant to America. I am searching down this avenue now.

Hope to be hearing from you soon.

Your new relative from Ohio
Ruth Cummins Mitcham
