John Cummins was born on 24 May 1820 in Thurles Tipperary Ireland and was married in St. John's
RC Basilica on 13 Nov.1839 to Johanna Maher (b 1816) Ireland (witnesses: Michael Darcy and
Mary Slattery). John and Johanna had 5 children: Elizabeth christened at St. John's RC Basilica
on 2 Sep 1844 (Godparents Patrick Doran and Margaret Cormack); Michael christened at
St. John's RC Basilica on 25 May 1846 (Godparents Timothy Quinlan and Mary Power?);
Anastasia christened at St. John's RC Basilica on 16 July 1848 (Godparents Patrick and Ellen
Cormack); John christened at St. John's RC Basilica on 21 July 1850 (Godparents Michael
and Bridget Healy); and Thomas James christened at St. John's RC Basilica on 8 Jun 1854
(Godparents Thomas Murphy and Anastasia Healy). John and his first wife Johanna Cummings
died in Bridgeport, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada. The name change to Cummings probably
happened in Cape Breton.
