Jon:I really just started exploring this scenario as a good circumstantial case. My Joseph Cummins, b. ca. 1818/20 in Virginia, lived in Greene county IN in 1850. He names his sons Samuel B, John, George, and Mahlon. In the adjoining county was a Samuel Cummins, age 64 (b. 1784) in Virginia, who also had sons Samuel B, John, George, and Mahlon. Furthermore, living next to this bunch was an elderly Martha Cummins, also b. 1784 in Virginia. Some of Samuel Cummins (1784)'s children stated a birthplace of Tennessee, so I went back to TN census, using their ages as a guideline, and found in Anderson county TN, a Samuel Cummins living next door to a Martha Cummins, and the age ranges + number of children matched perfectly. From there, I just started looking thru the Virginia censuses for likely matches. There, I found a Samuel Cummins/Cummings, living next door to an older Joseph Cummins, so the circumstantial evidence, at least, is piling up. I have no proof whatsoever that my Joseph is a son of Samuel Cummins, (1784), except that they both named sons identically. I will try to write more when I have my information at hand. Les.
