I'm afraid all of the low-hanging fruit--all the easily accessible information about WV Robert "Robin" Cummins on the Internet--has already been gathered. Some solid evidence of Robert's parents may yet emerge, but will probably involve some serious sleuthing among local courthouse records, archives, and other primary sources. Regarding the land dispute between Robert Cummins and William Bell in September 1779 recorded in "Chalkley's Chronicles," I always assumed that this Robert was Robert Edmonson Cummings (the son of Rev. Charles Cummings), because we know from an earlier entry that the piece of land in contention was purchased by Rev. Charles Cummins and wife Mille from William Bell, and sold or given to Robert Cummins nine years earlier in Nov. 1770. It would make sense that Charles would give the land to his own son, but the reference to Jane Cummins (Robert's daughter) that you cite throws a monkey wrench: "Jane Cummins was summoned as a witness in the dispute and mentioned on April 30 1799 that her father (Robert Cummins) came to this place (Augusta, Virginia) to live 23 or 24 years earlier." Twenty-three years prior to 1799 would be 1776. Robert Edmondson Cummings wasn't born until 1781 and WV Robert was only four years old in 1776. And neither Robert had a daughter named Jane, as far as I know. Other references to Robert Cummins in "Chalkley's Chronicles" are similarly problematic. WV Robert's parents may be hiding in plain sight or may even be mentioned in "Chalkley's Chronicles," but we'll have to await a more diligent researcher to sift through primary sources and prove the link. Sylvia, I'll be sure and keep you posted if I learn anything new. Best regards, Bob Cummings Notify Administrator about this message?
