Several GEDCOMs at the Worldconnect site show that Robert "Robin" Cummins (1772-1841) was a son of Charles "Chad" Cummins (1732-1812), but what is the basis for this connection? Charles "Chad" Cummins should more properly be referred to as Charles Cummings, the well-known Presbyterian minister in Pennsylvania and Virginia. Rev. Charles Cummings' life is well documented in "Biographies of Early American Presbyterians" (online) and other sources: he came to America from Ulster at age 18, studied theology at Carlisle College, married Millicent Carter in 1766, and lived most of his life near Abingdon, Washington County, VA, where he died in 1812.
Circumstantial evidence suggests that Charles Cummings could have been the father of Robert "Robin" Cummins: (1) the Rev. Charles Cummings was in the right place at the right time (Virginia in the latter 18th century), (2) among their children Charles and Millicent Cummings had sons named Robert and Charles, and (3) Robert "Robin" Cummins lived only 130 miles NE of Abingdon in Greenbrier County, Virginia (WV after 1863).
Unfortunately the devil is in the details. Rev. Charles Cummings' son Robert was Robert Edmondson Cummings, born in Washington County, VA, on May 16, 1781 (i.e., nine years after Robert "Robin" was born). This Robert Edmondson Cummings was fairly well-known in his own right. He married Mary Rebecca Campbell about 1804 in Abingdon, Washington Co., VA, moved to Eagle Bend, Tennessee in 1834, where he died on July 21, 1861. He was elected to the Virginia Assembly between 1826-1830, and there are paintings of both Robert Edmondson Cummings and Mary Rebecca Campbell by the itinerant French portrait painter Francois Bernard in the Smithsonian.
I am as eager to find the parents of Robert "Robin" Cummins as anyone, but this link with Rev. Charles Cummings appears to be spurious. Does anyone have any additional information that would either support or disprove a connection between Robert "Robin" Cummins and Rev. Charles Cummings?
