Stephen Cunboo, SC, War of 1812

I just located the following War of 1812 record: Cunboo, Stephen -- Rowe's Regiment South Carolina Militia. I have the military file for the following War of 1812 record: Cumbo, Stephen -- 3rd Regiment (Moore's) North Carolina Militia. I strongly suspect the North Carolina record is for Stephen, son of Cannon Cumbo. This Stephen is not in the 1810 census in NC, but he is in other NC records in 1808 and 1811--he is named as sthe son of Cannon. I also strongly suspect the South Carolina record for Stephen Cunboo is actually for Stephen Cumbo who is listed in the 1810 census in Edgefield, SC in a household of 7 'other free.'
Stephen of Edgefield is my ancestor, and I'm trying to place him in the correct Cumbo/variation thereof family. Many researchers place the SC Stephen Cumbo as the son of Cannon Cumbo or the brother of Cannon Cumbo, but I have doubts regarding this family placement.
I would enjoy hearing from other people researching this unique and interesting family.
