Susan, I believe that your J. T. Cumbie was J. Thomas (I do not know his first name) was the son of Hiram J. Cumbie, born 7 Jan 1837 and Frances A. Watson (they married on 26 July 1857 in Upson County, Georgia). Hiram served in the Civil War with two brothers in Company A, 46th Georgia Infantry Regiment. J. T. was their first born son, born in 1859. They had at least 8 more children. The family moved to Cooke County, Texas in the late 1870s. Hiram J. Cumbie died 4 November 1911 while visiting a daughter in Johnston County, Oklahoma. His parents were Alexander Davis Cumbie, born about 1812 in South Carolina and Henrietta Washington Gill. I do not know any more about J. T. Cumbie. Perhaps the 1900 New Mexico census would be the next place to look.
