Hello Jane,
I noticed your query<no relation> You didn't give much info about your grandfather ie appx year of birth or age and year of death. I could look for his birth ref if I have appx year. Once you have his birth cert it will give parents names<+ maiden name of mother> I did however--have a look at some census records for Cumberbatch and did find a family in 1901. The head of this family was born in the West Indies<Barbados> and his wife Alice L born in London. He was a Consulting Surgeon.His first name was Alponso.They had an 11 year old daughter Ellen born in Herts. The family had 7 servants listed. Census was in St. Marylebone. If any of the above sounds familiar I can send you census record as 'attach' if interested via e/mail.
I also had a look to see who Alponso married. He married Alice Lucy MOFFATT in 1880 in St.George/Hanover Sq,London.
It's possible that they had other children after 1901 but I only found one daughter. The above may mean nothing to you but I thought it of interest because of the West Indies connection!
