Dear Carole, Sorry I've been delayed in answering you. I contacted some of my cousins to be sure I got some of the stories correct, plus I caught a cold. You are correct that Aunt Jane was blind. According to family legend, Aunt Jane was carrying a baby (my Aunt Jean )when she slipped and fell. The baby was fine but Aunt Jane hit her head really hard and that is how she became blind. Mary Culshaw was born 8/27/1872, died 4/13/1947 she married a Harrington. Jane lived with Mary and both supported themselves by being seamstresses, and not just any seamstresses. They made Communion dresses, and wedding gowns and were well known in Duquesne. My Grandmother was closest with Margaret (b. 8/27/1872, died 2/11/1960). Aunt Maggie (Margaret) married Eugene Burd (Uncle Mort) and they adopted 3 children: Charles Cedric Burd (b. 10/25/11, baptized at St. Stanslaus in Copper Cliff, Ontario Canada, died 1990 in Los Angeles, California). Robert Bruce Burd (b. 6/28/18, baptized at St. Anne de Bellevue, Quebec, Canada, last known address (1960) Inglewood, California) and Mary Luceile Burd (b 2/17/16, baptized at St. Anne de Bellevue, Quebec, died ?). Aunt Maggie was very instrumental in my Grandparents eloping and getting married in West Virginia. Aunt Maggie was a very devout Catholic and was the first person I ever saw laid out. She was a member of the Lay Franciscians, regularly attended First Friday Mass and was laid out in a brown nun's garment). The next funeral I attended, I was shocked and confused that that person wasn't in a brown nun's garment). Thank you for your information. Mary Ellen Netzel Notify Administrator about this message?
