Hi Cynthia,
Your problems took some unravelling but I think I can give you some answers - except as to why you have the birth certificate for Mary, the child of Thomas Culshaw and Esther Dickinson/Diconson. I have checked the Weld Bank baptism registers and this Mary was born to Thomas & Esther on the date you give but I don't know the connection to your family. Did you inherit the certificate or is it one you've sent for - and is perhaps of no relevance? This Thomas & Esther have no other children baptised at Weld Bank and their marriage and deaths are not recorded there either. The sponsors for the Baptism of Mary are James Culshaw and Mary Ormashaw.

Next, who are the 2 Thomas Culshaws - the men buried in the same grave as Mary & Daniel Farnworth? I saw the grave yesterday when I walked round the graveyard at Weld Bank. They are about to remove the kerb stones (not the head stones) there and I wanted to find as much as possible before the change. You will see from your photo that the grave was started with the death of Margaret Culshaw 1878, then Thomas, her husband d 1903 and their son Thos. 1901. I believe the older Thomas is brother to Mary Farnworth. The burial register shows Thomas and Margaret coming from Skelmersdale - which is where the Culshaw family moved to after living in Coppull. The son, Thomas, is shown in the register as from 'Park Brook Cottage, Shevington' which is near Wrightington. For further proof of the brother/sister relationship see the note below which Frank Culshaw kindly sent to me after I posted my last note. You will see Henry & Elizabeth's son Thomas, aged 21 in 1851, which suggests a birth about 1830. This fits with a death in 1903 aged 73.

Also, your info on the 1861 census of Henry & Elizabeth with a child, Mary, aged 4, suggests a birth about 1857 and fits with a death in 1921 aged 64.

Frank's note:
HI PAULINE .
MY NAME IS FRANK CULSHAW I WAS DOING A BIT OF RESEARCH FOR MARIA YATES AND SAW YOUR LETTER TODAY I CAME ACROSS THIS FAMILY IN WRIGHTINGTON IN 1851 ON THE CENSUS
45 MOSSEY LEA .
HENRY CULSHAW HEAD AGE 45 TAILOR
ELIZABETH CULSHAW WIFE AGE 42
WILLIAM CULSHAW SON AGE 23
THOMAS CULSHAW SON AGE 21 MINER
JOHN CULSHAW AGE 18
HENRY CULSHAW SON AGE 16
OLIVER CULSHAW SON AGE 14 TAILOR
JAMES CULSHAW SON AGE 10
BETTY CULSHAW DAUGHTER AGE 7
ALICE CULSHAW DAUGHTER AGE 3
ANN CULSHAW DAUGHTER AGE 1
ALL BORN WRIGHTINGTON.

20 LUNLEY LANE
OLIVER CULSHAW AGE 62 TAILOR
MARGARET CULSHAW AGE 70 WIFE
ALL BORN WRIGHTINGTON.

A further note: Thomas and Margaret (nee Hart) had some 8 children baptised at Weld Bank.
They were:
William 1856
James 1857
Elizabeth 1859
Henry 1862
Mary Ann 1868
John 1870
Margaret Ellen 1871
Agnes 1872
Unfortunately, their son, Thomas, isn't listed. Perhaps he was baptised in St Mary's, Chorley, which was open by 1863.

Final word - so far I haven't found any link between these Culshaws and mine which are the same as Maria Yates' ancestors: John C married Ann Holden in 1840 and John's father was Henry. I think it is possible that my John and your Henry were brothers and, therefore, both sons of Henry Culshaw of Wrightington but I haven't proved this yet. I went to the Catholic church there recently and learnt that all the old Catholic records for Wrightington are in the Lancs. Record Office. I have begun the search through these but there are lots of pages on film - and no index. I'll let you know if I find anything.

Kind regards,
Pauline Critchley
