First thanks to Bobbie Turney for sending me a copy of the following letter: This leterr was written by Viola Cahtey Her Father was Richard M. Culp, mother Quunie Kellogg Her Grandfather was R. A. Culp married to Mary Jane Scott Her Great Grandfather was Josiah Culp married to Rachel (Easton) Eaton In her listing of Josiah & Rachel Culps children she shows R. A. (Richard Culp) b, 1843 in ILL, died 1918 in TX, wife Mary Jane Scott Born 1846, died 1906. Gatesville, TX I can find no connections between the Culps you mentioned and the ones I'm working on. I do appreciate hearing from you and I'll send you what I have. I'm told the original Culps came from Bavaria or the Rhine Palatinate in Germany. They left during or following the religious persecution of the 100 years War. They went to England and changed their name from KOLB to CULP. The original land grant of William Penn was given to Jacob and William Culp. This land is now known as Culp's Hill in Gettysberg, Pennsylvania. Wesley Culp of Richmond Virginia was killed on Culp's Hill (Battle of Gettysberg) in 1863. I'm told that there are a lot of Culps in Penn. I hope what I'm sending will be of help to you. Sincerely Viola Cathey Great-grandfather R. A. (Richard) Culp m Scott, Mary Jane I have more information on this line of Culps if it will be of use to you.
I know from other documents that I (Reta Brown) have located that this lady also corresponded with a Mrs. Pollard who also was some how connected to this CULP family. Does anyone out there know where and how the Pollard family was related. I know that she passed away (in the 1970's) I think. What really stuck out to me in Viola Cathey's letter was the name William Penn. The reason for this is because my father (Cecil Raymond Culp) had a brother named William Pen Culp; their father was Jerimiah "Jerry" Culp son of Benjamin D. Culp son of Josiah Culp. Do any of you have any land grant records to the William Penn Culp mentioned in Viola Cathey's letter. Does anyone have any information on the Wesley Culp of Richmond Virginia which Viola Cathey mentions in her letter? Sorry about the length of this posting, but felt it needed to be available here for everyone to see. Reta (Culp) Brown
