When did we get off the boat? Cullom vs. Cullum?

I am a direct decendant of Jesse Cullum (d. 1837), son of Wm. Cullum, Sr. (d. 1822), son of Thomas Cullum (d. 1774-75)and Elizabeth Johnson. Looking for information on those who predate Wm. and Elizabeth -- ultimately, interested in where in the British isles did our family come from and when did they come over.

Also, My gggrandfather was David Craighead Cullum (d. 1899 in a powder blast in Tennessee). Half of his 12 children spelled their last name "Cullum" and half spelled them "Cullom" (as I do). Anyone know why the spelling change?
