There is a mathematician, physicist, and astronomer
by the name of William Cullen - you can read about
him in any encyclopedia. He was born 1710 in
Hamilton, Lanark, Scotland. Died 1790. He had a
couple kids who came to the US - New Hope, West
Virginia to be exact.
"Physician, born in Hamilton, Strathclyde. He studied
at Edinburgh, and in 1740 set up as a physician in
Glasgow, where he was appointed to the chair of
medicine (1751). In 1755 he moved to Edinburgh,
occupying a series of chairs in chemistry and medicine.
He is largely responsible for the recognition of the
important part played by the nervous system in health
and disease."
William (the scientist): His father was William
Cullen b. 1684. Mother was Elizabeth Robertson
b. 1688
William's wife was named Anna Johnstone (1710-1786).
They had two kids listed here: Robert (b. abt. 1743) and
John (b. 26feb1758 in Glasgow, Lanark). John d. 17aug1827
in New Hope, W Va.; His wife was Nancy Foster (m. 1779).
Nancy Foster (26feb1758-24mar1831) was the daughter of
William Foster (b. 1732) - mother not known
John Cullen and Nancy Foster had 11 kids born between 1780
and 1799. They were: Elizabeth, Thomas, Mary, Margaret,
William, John Patrick, Thomas, Nancy, Jane, James, Dorcus.
Dorcus (1799-1885), m. George Brocius in 1821. They seem to
have lived in Harrison, W Va.
There is also a long line of Cullens from Lanarkshire, Scotland at www.gendex.com though I don't know if these two lines are related or not.
