follow up thoughts - he was presumably a close relative, as the phrase "will hear something to his advantage" often implied an inheritance. Maybe Christopher was the estranged brother you thought might exist? And maybe their father (Charles, if the other leads are correct) might have died fairly recently back in Ireland? of course, Christopher could have been an uncle or cousin as well.

On perusing census records, can't find any evidence of a Christopher in Montana from 1900 or after, but he may have not stayed there long. There was a Christopher Cullen in Rochester in the 1880 census, but he matches one found there in 1910-1920, and also one found in Rochester city directories from the 1880s and 1890s - so he appears to have been in Rochester continuously and could not have been the one who left town about 1889 for Montana.
