Thank you for getting back to me and for suggesting those links! He was definitely Roman Catholic, and I know he died in Rochester April 18, 1899. My uncle knows exactly where he's buried (Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Rochester, NY). Interestingly enough, we had found a wedding certificate for 1893 for a Jas H Cullen and Hannah Dougherty. I figured that was wrong because his wife's name was Nora and she was in a 1900 census as head of household and there was a Patrick Culhane and Maragret Culhane listed as a sister and brother to the head of house. I figured her maiden name was Culhane. Last night I went back and looked at the wedding certificate and Hannah Dougherty's mother's name was Mary Culhane. It's quite a coincidence if Hannah is not Nora, but I am not sure how accurate online historical wedding records are. If that is the correct person, then James' father's name was Charles (Chas on the certificate) and mother was Catherine (maiden name unknown).
