Hello Erin,

Your search is really hard. Civil registration in Ireland didn't start until 1864, so there's no birth certificate for James Henry Cullen to find. Something like 60% of Roman Catholic baptismal records from that time are still surviving, but finding which James Cullen born in 1861-1863 is yours would be very difficult (two names like "James Henry" were unusual at that time, but there's a good chance he was baptized just as James (Jacobus in Latin) or Henry).

If James Henry was Protestant (unlikely) that would be very useful information to narrow down your search.

My favorite site for finding these records is http://ifhf.brsgenealogy.com/ But even if you find a James Henry Cullen born in Kildare in 1862, it would be hard to be sure it was the right one, without the confirmation of already knowing his exact birthdate or names of his parents.

Have you found his gravestone/cemetery record if they exist? Death certificate? (would probably just list Ireland as birthplace but you never know).

A good site for New York State newspapers is www.fultonhistory.com

If you have a living male Cullen relative, they could do a DNA test and see if they are related to Cullens from a specific area of Ireland.

Maybe eventually someone will see your query here and be able to fill in your family history--I know the internet has worked like that for me before.

Bernie
