CULLEN - William Alfred(Albert) & STYNER(STINER) Elizabeth
Posted by: Pauline Day (ID *****4583) Date: January 10, 2009 at 23:24:42
  of 1875

Cornelius Cullen was b.1782 Corcloghan Co Cavan Ireland. Married 1807 to Mary Rogers b.1790 Killenkere Co Cavan Ireland. Was transported as a convict to the Colony of New South Wales Sydney Australia arriving on the "Isabella" on 9 March 1822. They had six children Bartholomew b.1808, Margaret B.1811, Mary Ann b.1813, Rosanna b. 1815, James b.1818 and Cornelius Jnr b. 1820. Mary Cullen, aged 37 years, died at Campbelltown NSW on 15 May 1827 and Cornelius, aged 76 years died at Campbelltown NSW on 20
May 1858. Their eldest child, Bartholomew married Susannah Turner in 1838. Susannah died aged 37 years on 11 April 1859 and Bartholomew 5 Dec 1875 in Upper Picton NSW. They had nine children _ Mary Ann, Thomas, Susannah, Bartholomew, James, Margaret, John, Jane and Sarah. John was born at Redbank Upper Picton on 30 December 1850 and on 25 May 1868 married Eleanora Bell(Ellen Honora, Ellen Nora, Ellen, Nora). They had eleven children, John 1870 Gundagai, Mary Ann b.1872 Cooma, William Alfred(Albert) b.1874 Shepards Town near Adelong,Arthur Ernest b.1877, Thomas b.1879, Susanna M b.1882, Alexander b.1884 Benedict b. 1886 all at Queanbeyan, Catherine M b.1888 Bungendore, David A b.1892 and John 1896.
William Alfred (Albert) married Elizabeh Styner (Stiner)around 1902 in Wagga Wagga NSW. Elizabeth was the daughter of Christian Styner(Stiner) and Elizabeth Reginard. This history has been difficult to piece together but it is presumed that William and Elizabeth had some children, perhaps Benedict in 1902,Elizabeth b. and d. 1904, William J R born Glen Innes NSW 1905 (presumed to be known as Jack) and Olive E (Olivera)b. 1907. Elizabeth aged 37 years died on the 8 April 1908 in Walgett District Hospital.
On 10 June 1908, William Alfred (Albert) Married Emily Ada Neilsen in Merewether Newcastle NSW. The fate of William's young children is not known but could possibly have been raised by Elizabeth's parents - the Styners. William and Emily went on to have five children, Thomas Alfred b.1909, Vida H b.1911, Francis David b.1912, Clarice J b.1913 and another male b. and d. 1916. William left his second family sometime between 1916 and his death on 11 May 1952. He died at the State Hospital and Home in Liverpool NSW and is buried in the Roman Catholic section of the Liverpool Cemetery. Prior to his death he was residing at Lidcombe NSW. The informant on his Death Cert was his son J Cullen (presumably Jack) from Lidcombe NSW. At the time of William's death, the certificate shows his issue as two living, William J R aged 47 and Olive E aged 45, with one male and one female deceased (possibly Benedict and Elizabeth. There was no mention on the Death Cert of his second family. The sons and grandchildren of William from his second family are known to have met Jack and Ollie, which seems to indicate that this history is probably correct. I would love to hear from any descendants or anyone who knows the descendants of William J R Cullen and Olivera Cullen (married name if so unknown)or has any information about William Alfred(Albert)Cullen so we can make sure our history is accurate. I too am a descedant of the convict Cornelius. The family I have just spoken about are from Cornelius's son Bartholomew and I am from Cornelius's son James.
Would love to hear from you. Other members of this family have done extensive research and have loads of information on this extensive family. Perhaps we can fill in some of the gaps for you too.

Regards
Pauline Day (nee Cullen)
