From what I gather, the Rebellion of 1798 had religious overtones to it. It seems quite likely that Robert's father, Thomas converted along the way. He was probably of Anglican religious background as he married at Margate, Kent England, in an Anglican church to Ann Adams.

The official Church of Ireland was Anglican, and it seems that the Anglican Irish were more prominent in Leinster. He must have switched from Anglican to Presbyterian along the way.
