Culbertson/Hughes, Union Parish, LA & MS
Found in the US Census for Union Parish, 1850, John Culbertson and his wife Bethany (misspelled as Berthena) Heard are living in Union Parish with a son and with their grandchildren. By this date both Wesley Y. Hughes and his wife (their daughter) Elizabeth Culbertson, had died.
Here is their listing (I am descended through David):
17 783 783 Culbertson John 60 M GA
18 783 783 Culbertson Berthena 63 F GA
19 783 783 Culbertson William 38 M GA
20 783 783 Hughs David 13 M MS
21 783 783 Hughs Mary 10 F MS
22 783 783 Hughs Frances 8 F LA
23 783 783 Hughs John 6 M LA
I am hoping to find Wesley and Elizabeth in MS census records for 1840, since it appears Mary was born there then. I am going to try both Hughes and Hughs. However I have found him in LA by 1842 (from Union Co records):
"07 June, 1842 Wesley Hughes was appointed overseer
of the road commencing at the D'Arbonne Ferry to the
Twelve Mile Tree, directing the hands of Wm. Culbertson,
Michael Gill, William Laurence, C. Dutton, Mrs. Sterling,
William Pipes, G. W. Dutton, A. C. McAfee, Michael
Feazel and JOHN FEAZEL."
I am still searching for a birthdate on Elizabeth and parentage for Wesley Y. Hughes. Any information or leads would be appreciated. I am also interested in family connections to the Culbertsons if anyone is familiar with this line or belongs to it.
