Porter & Mary Ann Culbertson-War of 1812 pension application
In 1878, Mary Ann Babb Culbertson of Kemper County Mississippi applied for a War of 1812 widow's pension. Her application was rejected for lack of proof of service but it contains valuable genealogical information:

MARY ANN CULBERTSON, age 86, a resident of Kemper Co MS
widow of PORTER CULBERTSON who was a private who volunteered at Larrance C.H.So.Ca. for the term of six months which he served; service terminated by reason of an honorable discharge.
His description at enlistment: age-22 years; occupation-farmer; birthplace-Larrance Dist So.Ca.; brown hair, blue eyes, Six ft & 5 inches high & light complexion.
She further states that she was married to the said PORTER CULBERTSON in the Dist of Larrance in the State of South Carolina on the 24th day of Dec A.D.1819 by one McInn who was a Justice of the Peace and that her name before her said marriage was MARY ANN BABB and that she has not remarried since the death of the said soldier; and she further states that she never had been married previous to her marriage to the said PORTER CULBERTSON and that her said husband PORTER CULBERTSON died at Gainesville in the State of Alabama on the 15th day of Sept A.D.1841 and she further declares that the following have been the places of residence of herself and her said husband since the date of his discharge from the Army, viz: Larrance Dist So.Ca. from 1812 to the year 1816, In Tuscaloosa Albama from 1816 to 1818, In Gainesville Ala. from 1818 until the 15th of September 1841.

WITNESSES:
ALEN CULBERTSON, age 60 of Kemper Co and EADY CULBERTSON, age 65 of Kemper Co MS state they have known MARY ANN CULBERTSON for 44 years and they can identify her as the wife of PORTER CULBERTSON. That they were persoally acquainted with the applicant during the life of her husband and from his death to the present time.
MARY ANN CULBERTSON deposes and says, by reason of infirmity of age she, the said MARY ANN CULBERTSON is unable to travel.
