Hello Susan, My name is Jill Lopez and I am new to genealogy. I am a descendant of the Cuevas family. I am not exactly sure if I am a direct descendant of Juan de Cuevas, but I will try to give you my information that I have (not verified): Jill Lopez Joan Abbley, my mother Elwood Abbley, ( My mom’s father) Agnes Castened, (Elwood’s mother) Sophie Cuevas (Agnes’s mother) Charles F Cuevas (Sophie’s father) Juan de Cuevas (Charles’ father) Ok, now to respond to a posting you have made some time ago. First, I have read the copy of the Ladner Odyssey. My library had to do some digging but got it sent here on interlibrary loan(2006). I will have to check for you which library they got it from, but I had to pay $1.00 to check it out. My grandfather, Elwood Abbley is mentioned in that book. Secondly, the following information that I have is from my mother, Joan Abbley. She told me that when she was around 15-16 y/o, some lawyers from Louisiana came to her father, Elwood, and disclosed to him that he was a descendant of Juan Cuevas and they were contacting the descendants and asking for $10.00 from all of the descendants to pay the lawyer expenses to try to reclaim Cat Island. My mother was born in 1943, thus around 1958 +/- they were looking into this matter. I have tried to start looking for lawsuit information in N.O. myself, but am only early into my explorations. She doesn’t remember the name of the lawyers. Lastly, my mother had an article years ago that was done in Southern Living magazine (I believe) detailing the exact events at Cat Island where the English allegedly burned Juan Cuevas and tortured him trying to get information about a passage way to N.O. In an estate sale of the home of Rudolph Victor Abbley (my grandfather’s brother) my mother obtained an oversized solid silver fork and spoon that had been told to her that Cuevas gave each of his kids a set. The utensils have crown markings on them and we have brought them to an antiques expert who was baffled by them. Unfortunately we didn’t finish following up on it as of yet. I sure hope that this email finds you well, and that it will be of some use to you. I read that you are a paralegal. I was in a paralegal program a couple of years ago, and I am studying right now to take my LSAT in October, so hopefully we can dig up some information about our ancestors and Cat Island! My mom was encouraging me the other day because she said some years ago there was talk of drilling for oil! You can reach me at this email address: jillibaby@insightbb.com I live in Southern Indiana (just outside of Louisville,Ky.) and my brother lives in Diamondhead, Mississippi Hope to hear from you soon, Respectfully, Jill Notify Administrator about this message?
