Hello all,
I am currently working on a comprehensive "background" search of where I came from, and I keep referring back to an old story from my Grandmother (Mrs. Modez Hatten Lott 1920-1985) on my dad's side. She said, as a small girl circa early to mid 1920's, that she and her mother would row out to Cat Island in a small boat to care for their cattle which were on the island. She also claimed to have direct relation to one Juan de Cuevas, who lived on the island well before then. Her story of how he got there was this: Juan de Quaves was a Spanish nobleman who was exiled from Spain for smuggling (what I don't know). The timing seems right, as the Mississippi Coast had been succeeded to Spain in 1779. And looking at other built family trees, it does seem to verify somewhat. Also, as told by my late Grandmother, the island was given to either him or very close decendents by the US Government for the refusal to help British General Parkenham when he was seeking passage to New Orleans to meet General Andrew Jackson in the War of 1812. Let me know when I can stop...
I guess what I'm trying to get at is: does anyone have verification of these stories? Even if they are not true (most of my research points that it is, however), I would ask for some guidance on making the connection between my grandmother and Juan de Cuevas. The tie: My grandmother's (Modez Hatten Lott) mother was a Cuevas who married a Hatten (don't know the name). My grandmother was the last of 13 childen, so the Mother Cuevas' life would seem to cover anywhere from 1885? to at least 1920. Any help on the barrage of things I've slung out over this thing would be greatly appreciated.
