Leonel is a common name, too.

Jose Joaquin Palma, a citizen from Bayamo who fought for the independence of Cuba against Spain, is the author of the national anthem of Honduras, this man lived at the same time of the one you are looking for.

In the 2004 phone book of the city of Bayamo, there are 7 persons with Palma surname (the rate of phones per 100 habitants is very low in Cuba).

I am sure that the person you are looking for lived in the city of Bayamo sometime during the first half of the XIX century.

I live in Santiago de Cuba, some 85 miles to the east of Bayamo.
