Hi Maria:

1. First, thank you so much for the information you shared on Camaguey and your connection to Olga Zayas-Bazan. You are the very first person I've met who was born in Camaguey. Camaguey plays a central role in my Barranco family history and yet I've never been able to visit there. Hopefully, this will change.

2. My GGGrandfather, Don Pedro Agustin Barranco (c. 1780-1810) married Josefa Zayas-Bazan abt 1800 - We think he was born in the Canary Islands, Spain or Cuba - anecdotal information. They had following children:

- Jose Agustin Barranco y Zayas - b. abt 1800
- Brigida Barranco
- Francisco Barranco
- Teresa Barranco - b. 1804

3. Don Pedro died abt 1805-1810 - we believe in Camaguey, but haven't found any death records. Josefa Zayas-Bazan remarried in 1810 in Camaguey to Tomas Betancourt - church record.

4. My GGrandfather, Jose Agustin Barranco (1800-1871) married Ana Maria De Miranda y Napoles (1810-1870) in 1830 in Puerto Principe in the parish of Nuestra Senora de La Soledad. They had 15 children of whom 6 reached adulthood and married. Jose Agustin was a lawyer, owned property in Puerto Principe including a home, a Ranch called Pineda and some other property. In 1869 they moved to Habana as their property in Puerto Principe was burned and confiscated by the Spanish military. Both Jose Agustine and Ana Maria died within 14 months of one another in Habana and were buried in Cuba - don't know whether it was in Habana or in Puerto Principe.

5. My Grandfather, Manuel Francisco Barranco (1843-1894), was born in Puerto Principe as were all his siblings. As a young man, he was involved in the war of 1868. He eventually made his way to Key West, Florida where he lived, met a young lady named Mercedes Fernandez whom he married. He established an import-export business and cigar Co in Tampa, New York City and had a store in Habana.

6. My Grandmother, Mercedes, bore eleven (11) children of whom seven lived through childhood. Both my Grandfather and Grandmother were involved in the Cuban Patriotic movement in the U.S from 1870 up til their deaths in 1894 (Manuel) and 1896 (Mercedes). They were close friends and compatriots of Jose Marti and other Cuban leaders. Jose Marti was Godfather to my Aunt, Patria Barranco, who died in 1895 at the age of two years. My Grandmother was a poet and author who was either a correspondent or regularly wrote articles in Patria and other Cuban American periodicals.

7. My father, Augustine Peter Barranco (1883-1974) grew up in New York City. He became a Lawyer and had a practice in Central and South American law for about 50 years.

8. I'm afraid I have rambled on for 8 paragraphs, but I wanted to share my connection with Camaguey and with my connection to the Zayas-Bazan family. I have no information on my Zayas-Bazan lin other than the marriage record in Camaguey. If you or your Uncle discover anything leading back to my Josefa Zayas-Bazan I would very much appreciate anything you can share with me.

Again, Maria, many thanks for sharing your information with me and look forward to hearing from you again.

Steve
