Many of the men on my paternal side fought in the War of Independence. My grandfather Nicolas Hernandez Echemendia was only 16 years of age when he joined the Cuban army. His father was a Colonel in the army, I forgat his first name but I know that they called him "The Tocayo" and his second last name was Moreno. Maybe his name was Nicolas Hernandez Moreno. There is also a famous Cuban "mambi" who was my grandfather's first cousin but i don't remember the name. I'll ask my father for the information and send it to you. On my paternal grandmother's side there are also many Cuban patriots of the war of Independence (that's what we call this war). For example, her first cousin General gerardo machado was one of Cuba's president, and my great grandfather Macario Machado was the first mayor of Moron, Camague, Cuba. His daughter Susana Maria machado Salazar (my paternal grandmother) was the person who raised the first Cuban flag in Moron, Camaguey. Many of my "antepasados" fought in the war of independence. Hope to hear from you soon.
