My name is Maria de los Angeles and I'm related to the machado's from Camaguey and Santi-Spiritus. My grandmother Susana Maria Machado Salazar was the first cousin to one of Cuba's presidents: gerardo Machado. In fact my grandmother who passed away in 1983 at the age of 100, was the one who raised the first cuban flag in the town of Moron, Camaguey. Her father Macario Machado was the first Mayor of Moron. My grandmother married Micolas Hernandez Echemendia also from Moron, Camaguey. Both families the machado's and the hernandez' fought in the war of independence from spain. My grandfather as well as his father and grandfather fought against Spain holding general and coronel's ranks. Anyway, I will like to keep in touch with you to see if we are relatives. I live in Houston, TX, and I'm involved in cancer prevention research. My family came from Cuba in 1962, and my brother and I came by ourselves before our parents. We are "Peter Pan Children". I don't know if you know that during the years 1961-1962, 14,500 Cuban children left Cuba without their parents, and my brother and I are one of those children. We were lucky that our parents, grandparents and most of the cousins, aunts and uncles came to the US. Other children were not so lucky and their family never came. Anyway, I still have relatives in Cuba in Camaguey, Oriente, Las Villas and La Habana. Hope to hear from you soon. PS: there is a family tree of the Machado Family that you can view on the Cuba Genealogy page.
