Despite all its inconsistencies the Ellis Island site recording passenger arrivals in New York 1892-1925 reveals soem clues about this family. They seemed to have comprised: JOHN WADDLE: born 1851. Usually shown as born in Sunderland, but ona 1903 voyage he is described as Scottish and on the arrival of the ULUA after his death on board he was said to be 69y 8m and born in Dundee. Nevertheless, from his arrivals in NY from visits to the UK there was noted a J Waddle at Bolden Colliery, Durham (1910) and nephew Robert Waddle at 21 Mount Road, Sunderland (1912). During his time in Cuba his occupation is variously described as engineer, marine engineer, civil engineer, clerk, steamship agent. I wonder whether he worked for the New York & Cuba Mail Co (Ward Line)? It seems as if he set up a family home at 423 41st Street, Brooklyn certaily prior to 1903 and perhaps prior to 1899. PHOEBE WADDLE: consistently given as born in Sunderland 1857/8 - and their 8 children: STEPHEN WILSON WADDLE: born 1876. Grew up in Progreso, Mexico and married Eleanor Wilson in 1902 (what relation was she to SWW's mother Eleanor Wilson and his stepmother Phoebe?) and they seem to have occupied the family homein Brooklyn - no record of them traavelling to Cuba or UK during that period. Oddly, described as a "butcher" in 1892. GERTRUDE WADDLE: born 1879. Elusive, and makes only a single appearance, in 1892. PHOEBE WADDLE: born c1889 - in 1910 still single and probably a US citizen LAWRENCE G WADDLE: born Progreso 1892/93 (and listed as "Bertie" in 1895). Followed father's footsteps as a marine engineer. In 1914 he was living with his aunt Mrs Henry Robinson at 'Glencairn', Ashbrooke Terrace, East Bolden, Co Durham (studying or an apprentice?). In 1922/23 was working as 4th Engineer on the ss PINAR DEL RIO, trading between Cuba and the US. In 1921 he had declared his intention to settle permanently in the US. JOHN PERCIVAL WADDLE: born Progreso 1893/94 and became a marine engineer. In 1916 he was living with cousin T F Waddle at 'Haslemere', Bitterne, Southampton and arrived NY to join, as a crew member, the US steamer BERWINDVALE. BEATRICE WADDLE: born Progreso 1894/95 and then settled in the US THOMAS F WADDLE: born Progreso 1896. Described as 'clerk' in 1916, shortly before his marriage to Adelaide XXX. He became a naturalised US citizen on 20 Nov 1916 at City Hall, New York. MARGARET WADDLE: born 'New York City' c1899 - typist/stenographer Their addresses in Havana followed following sequence: 1909-1912 Hotel Luz 1912 L V Place 76-78 1916-1917 Vedado 7-27 (7 27th Street??) The details of the final tragic voyage of 1921 imply that the family had taken leave of Cuba for good. Although they were immediately destined for their Brooklyn home, there is a suggestion of them going to Norfolk VA. Perhaps all this is already known to you - no matter, as it was a fun few hours! I also checked the GRO index of British Consular births, marriages and deaths, but there are no Waddle entries for Mexico, Cuba or the US. Notify Administrator about this message?
