The Isle of Pines history is quite complicated after the US took over Cuba from Spain at the turn of the century. The best, and maybe the only, book on the subject is:
"Cuba's Island of Dreams - Voices from the Isle of Pines and Youth", by Jane McManus. It is a relatively new book and gives a good review of the history. I would highly recommend it to you.

The name you mentioned is not familiar to me. It was not mentioned in any of the material I have related to my father and uncle's time in the Isle of Pines.
