I'm getting close http://tanaya.net/vmw/H/rec-22376.html says he was a Major in the Army Reserve and served in Quang Gnai Province. That province, was in I Corp in the area where the Americal Division was located form 1967 to 1971. There were three Infantry Brigades in the Division, the 11th, the 196th and the 198th.

OK, found him in in the NARA AAD system online. He was in the Special Forces, in the 5th Special Forces Group.
