Almy aka poor farms were often run by private individuals. Children & adults may have been placed in their care by local authorities ie Board of Selectmen of the town of residence. The town would have been responsible for paying for their care. If a poor farm did not exist in a town the local authorities would place them with a family and pay the family for the care given. A record(a journal of expenditures) would have been kept by the Town and if lucky this record might still exist with the Town Clerk, Board of selectmen or the local historical society. In Connecticut there were residency requirements. If an indignet person moved to a neighboring town, the town this person moved from would have been responsible for paying the bills up to six months. Records kept by the Poor Farms or Almy belonged to the caregivers. These records may be in private hands now or local historical society.
