Dolbeare family

My understanding was that Benjamin Dolbear was from Montville, New London County, CT. His grandfather inherited a farm that became known as "Lorenzo Dow Place." However, I just received a page from a book on Darmouth Medical School from the Alumni Records Office which shows in a list of men entering in 1812, "Benjamin Dolbeare of Plainfield, Conn." Can someone explain how he would have been from both Windham and New London Counties.
