Dear Pam,
I am going to carefully reread your email.I am known as the family historian so have no fear.I have in front of me a pathetic piece of paper on which a cousin who died last year wrote her family tree in list form and gave it to me.The woman's name was May Lipson meyerson sp? myerson and she lived in Bristol until her death. Her father was Shimon(simon) and her mother was sarah.Joseph Lipson whose original name was Eshea was Simon's brother as was Abe(avrom) also called Joe.Makes no sense to me but that is how it is listed on this sheet.May was a very educated woman who taught in the Bristol schools for 40plus years.I have alot of faith in her note.
There were also other siblings according to the list.In order as they appear:
Yankel- it says russia next to his name so maybe he never came to america
Shimon
Eshea (Joe) married Eva
David married fanny
Abe or Avrom called Joe
Itzie name Issac noted as returned to Russia
Solomon who settled in Paris
Leepe known as Leo
My father,as an aside was born Solomon Bernard(really schlomo Bern in Jewish). He changed his name to Samuel Arthur or S. Arthur or Sam.Possibly an experiment to become assimilated or to hid the Jewishness for business purposes. Lots of names and name changes were common.
The parents of this brood were Yosef and Rasha.
I have at times wondered what happened to Arnie.I never knew him,but knew he existed.
My Mother's family was from Philadelphia. My maternal grandfather was a jewler in Phila. My grandfather Joseph Lipson never lived in Phila. to my knowledge. It must have been a visit that brought him to Phila.- to shop at George's Clothing store or maybe someone gave him the coupons.
Now I am rambling.Try the names I gave you that May put down for your Grandfather and see if any birth record shows up.
One last thought and an aside.i realise there are no females listed in the children's names. It is possible the females were to cvame later and never did get here.Pogroms?
I am going to read your message again.I don't think your grandfather was born here, but lets think about it.You know Yosef and Rasha translate to Joseph and Rose very easily.By the time social security started his last name was Lipson. Looking forward to hearing from you.
