Joanne, Thank you so much for contacting me.I think that your grandfather and mine may have been brothers.I am looking for information to prove or disprove this. The reason I think they were brothers is that in my grandfather's belongings (which I just got a couple of years ago) were some old certificates that were made out to Joseph Lipson and Mrs. Joseph Lipson of Bristol, CT and dated 1919.I at first thought they had probably belonged to my grandfather's parents but in researching I discovered that the only Joseph Lipson in Bristol, CT in 1919 was Joseph and Eva.Due to his age in 1920, 39 years old and my grandfather's which was 35 years I figured they were probably brothers. Also among the things were what I call "clothing coupons" from George's Clothing Store in Philadelphia. Then after researching Joseph and Eva's family and I learned that your grandfather had settled in Philadelphia. That didn't explain the connection to the clothing store but it sort of made sense with Samuel living there and granddad having coupons from a place in Philly.I know my grandfather traveled a lot before he married. He was in San Diego in about 1910, and I think he was in Chicago,IL in 1920 at the time the census was done.
I have had almost no luck in tracing my grandfather's life prior to his moving here to FL.He died in 1952 when I was only 9 years old so I didn't get a chance to learn much about him.My dad didn't talk about him very much either, they did not have the best of relationships. My grandfather's name was Abraham Norton Lipson, he seemed to sometimes use Albert N. but also used A.N. Lipson.I got his original social security number application and on that he said he had been born in New Haven, CT in 1884 and his parents were Joseph Lipson and Rose Roskin.I have tried two or three times to obtain a birth record but they tell me one does not exist. That would not be unusual for the time but then my sister told me that our dad said that granddad had come from either Poland or Russia in the very early 1900s, had lived in NY and worked loading flour onto ships on the docks for a while. He had some sort of connection to CT.He met my grandmother there, she was born and raised in Collinsville, CT to Swedish immigrants. She was living in working in Hartford in 1920 and I think he met her there and married sometime late in 1920 since my dad was born in Aug. 1921.On his birth record it gives granddad's place of birth as Bristol, CT.I checked there for a birth record and again one does not seem to exist. My grandmother died in 1922 and the following year, granddad brought my dad to FL for his health and they never left again as far as I know. One thing I remember about him is that he spoke with some sort of an accent so I really think that he was not born in this country.
I have been in contact with the sons of two of Joseph's daughters, Arnie Ravelson who is Sarah's (Shirley) son and with Paul Stein who is Mary's son. They were very kind and told me some things about the family but could not tell me anything about any possible brothers of Joseph.
I have rambled on much too long.I hope that maybe you can help me figure out if your Joseph and my Abraham (Albert) were brothers or not.It seems that they have to be related in some way, why else would granddad have these certificates and I don't see how they could have belonged to anyone else other than your grandfather.
Thank you,
Pam
