Dies At 61
Torrington (Special)
Hugh E. Meade, 61, Torrington's police chief for 25 years, died suddenly Saturday afternoon while at his hunting lodge in Norfolk. Medical Examiner Frank Ursoni said death was due to natural causes.

His body was found by his son, Hugh Jr., and a companion who had been hunting in the woods nearby. Police said the body was slumped over a sand pail which he was apparently using to sand a road to the lodge. The body was about 35 feet from the rear of his car.

Born Sept. 10, 1897, a son of Frank and Lily Hughes Meade, he has been a resident of Torrington for the past 26 years.

Named In 1933.
He was apponted to the Connecticut State Police Department July 6, 1923. After having been with the State Police at Canaan. Barracks for eight years, he then transferred to the Connecticut Motor Vehicle Department.

On Oct. 3, 1933, he was appointed chief of the Torrington Police Department, a post he held until his death.
Chief Meade is a member of the Connecticut State Police Association and was formerly a member of the executive board of that group.
He was a member of the New England Chiefs of Police Assn., the International Chiefs of Police Assn., and the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks, and the Fraternal Order of Eagles.

He leaves his wife, Mrs. Mary Christinat Meade; a son, Hugh E. Meade, Jr., a grandson, Jeffrey Alan Meade, and his father, Frank Meade, all of Torrington.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. at the Gleeson Mortuary, 258 Prospect St., Torrington, with the Rev. Joseph R. Swain, pastor of the First Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Center Cemetery, Norfolk.

Friends may call at the Mortuary Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m.; Monday, 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 10 p.m.
